Origins of the Rupertifest
The Rupertifest celebrates Saint Rupert of Salzburg – the first bishop of Salzburg and patron saint of the city and province. Born in Worms around 650, Rupert came to Bavaria as a missionary and, around 696, received the Roman settlement of Juvavum from Duke Theodo, from which today's Salzburg developed. He founded the Benedictine convent of Nonnberg and the Archdiocese of St. Peter, thereby shaping the cultural and spiritual development of the region. His feast day on 24 September is still a regional holiday in Salzburg today – and is celebrated with music, tradition, cuisine and cheerful gatherings at the Rupertifest.
