10 tips for bad weather in Flachau

Bad weather in Flachau? That’s exactly when the region really shows what it’s made of.

Sun, mountain views and alpine huts are, of course, all part of a summer holiday in Flachau. But let’s be honest: almost everyone ends up with a few rainy days at some point during their holiday. The good news? That’s exactly when you often discover sides of the region you wouldn’t otherwise have had time for.

And to be honest: a cosy day at the spa, a medieval castle shrouded in mist or a hot chocolate after a walk through the gorge all have their own unique charm.

Here are our favourite ideas for a varied programme of things to do in Flachau when the weather’s not so good – from relaxing to action-packed, from family-friendly activities to moments of pure indulgence.

1. A day at the Therme Amadé

For years now, the most popular answer to the question ‘What to do when it rains in Flachau?’ has been pretty clear: the thermal spa.

The Therme Amadé is just a few minutes’ walk away and is ideal for families, couples or anyone who simply wants to wind down.

What many people don’t realise is that the spa is much larger than it appears from the outside. Eleven different pools, a wave pool, a lazy river and several spectacular slides ensure that even a whole day there flies by. The ‘Looping Slide’ is particularly well-known – according to the spa, it’s the only one of its kind in Austria.

Those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere can retreat to the saltwater pools or the sauna area.

Insider tip

A late afternoon is particularly worthwhile, especially when the weather is changeable. Whilst fog slowly rolls over the mountains outside, you’re sitting inside in the warm saltwater pool – it’s hard to beat.

2. Deep into the mountain on the mine railway: Salzwelten Salzburg

Is it raining outside? Perfect. Because the temperature in the mountain is always the same anyway.

The Salzburg Salt Worlds are among the most exciting places to visit in the Salzburg region – and certainly not just for children.

Even the ride on the mine train into the mine is great fun. After that, you head deeper underground via long wooden slides, past old tunnels, right up to the underground raft ride.

And suddenly you realise: a rainy day can turn out to be quite an adventure.

Insider tip

Be sure to bring sturdy shoes. It’s cool and sometimes damp in the mine – so practical is better than stylish.

3. Hohenwerfen Castle: a medieval atmosphere whatever the weather

There are places that look almost even more impressive in light rain than they do in sunshine. Hohenwerfen Castle is definitely one of them.

The castle, which is over 900 years old, towers high above the Salzach Valley and, when shrouded in mist, almost looks like something out of a fantasy film. Add to that thick stone walls, dark corridors, historical exhibitions and birds of prey circling above the castle courtyard.

The highlight for many visitors is the famous birds of prey display. Several times a day, falconers showcase eagles, falcons and vultures in free flight.

Insider tip

If the weather holds up reasonably well, be sure to go and see the air show. You can take some truly spectacular photos, especially with dramatic clouds in the background.

4. Through the Liechtenstein Gorge – a real experience, even in the rain

When it rains, many people immediately think of indoor activities. Yet some outdoor experiences are actually particularly enjoyable in bad weather.

The Liechtenstein Gorge is one such example.

Between steep rock faces, the water rushes through the gorge, which is up to 300 metres deep. You’re surprisingly well sheltered by tunnels, footbridges and galleries – and the atmosphere in the gorge is often even more impressive when it rains.

The absolute highlight is the spectacular ‘Helix’ staircase: a huge spiral staircase made of Corten steel that leads around 30 metres down into the gorge.

Insider tip

It’s usually much quieter in the morning. What’s more, the gorge often has a particularly mystical atmosphere when there’s mist and light rain.

5. Small museums with loads of character

Not every rainy day calls for action.

Sometimes a cosy outing followed by a coffee is enough. There are a few small museums around Flachau that are surprisingly fascinating.

  • Altenmarkt Local History Museum
  • Silent Night Museum at the Pflegerschlössl in Wagrain

The Hermann Maier statue in the square in front of the gallery is almost a must-have photo opportunity in Flachau.

6. Shopping and strolling in the Salzburg region

Yes, that’s sometimes part of a holiday too.

If you fancy a spot of shopping, there are plenty of options around Flachau – from sports shops to outlet centres.

Popular with guests

  • Eben Outlet Centre (10% discount with the Flachau Summer Card)
  • Designer Outlet Salzburg
  • EUROPARK Salzburg

On rainy days in particular, this often makes for a really relaxing day out: a leisurely breakfast, a spot of shopping, a coffee and perhaps a bite to eat afterwards.

7. Pleasure rather than summits

Bad weather is the perfect excuse to really take your time over a meal.

Local cuisine, homemade pastries or a little wine tasting are simply the perfect way to spend a rainy day on holiday.

At the Flachau village shop, you’ll also find plenty of local produce and souvenirs from the region.

Insider tip

Many people underestimate just how cosy alpine huts can be when it’s raining. Inside, the stove is often crackling, whilst outside the clouds hang low over the mountains – that’s exactly how you imagine a holiday in Austria.

8. Stay active: tennis, skittles and indoor sports

Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you have to sit around all day.

At the Hanneshof Resort, there’s an indoor tennis court for anyone who wants to burn off some energy. Important: book in advance.

Bowling also works surprisingly well in the rain – especially for families or groups of friends.

9. Day trip to Salzburg

If the rain really does persist, it’s worth taking a trip to Salzburg.

The city is a delight whatever the weather

  • cosy coffee houses
  • narrow alleyways
  • museums
  • shopping
  • Hohensalzburg Fortress
  • Mozart City charm with an umbrella

Particularly popular

  • House of Nature

10. Perhaps the loveliest rainy day: playing cards on the mountain pasture

And then there are the days you remember most vividly later on.

Kaiserschmarrn on the table. Rain outside. A cosy, warm room inside. And a game of cards with family or friends.

Sometimes that’s all you need.

By the way, at the Flachau Tourist Board you can even get the Pongau version of DKT and playing cards featuring Flachau designs – perfect as a souvenir or for the next rainy day.

Conclusion: Rain in Flachau? It’s often more fun than you’d think

Of course, we love sunny days in the mountains. But a holiday isn’t just about picture-postcard weather.

And that’s exactly why rainy days are part of the experience too. They often lead to the cosiest moments in the huts, the most relaxing afternoons at the thermal baths and the most spontaneous excursions.

If you keep an open mind, Flachau’s bad-weather programme often lets you discover sides of the region you might otherwise have overlooked.

And to be perfectly honest: after a day of rain, you’ll be twice as delighted the next morning when the first ray of sunshine breaks over the mountains.
