The telephone number 140 is the emergency number for alpine accidents in Austria and thus the telephone number of the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service. So if you need help in alpine terrain, the number 140 will take you directly to one of the operations centres of the "Rotes Kreuz" (Red Cross) or to the Mountain Rescue Service.
